Getting Outside & Encouraging Natural Play with Young Children

First of all, welcome! This is the first post (of many to come) for Outdoor Tots. As a mom, I believe it is both important and just plain FUN to take my sons outside to play and explore. Not only does playing outside provide an outlet for all that extra energy, but it is also full of so many different learning opportunities!

Why is Natural Play Important?

Physical Activity for a Healthy Body

Playing outside can do so much for a child’s health and development. The outdoors are the perfect place for physical activity, (better than the living room, right?) with lots of space for kids to run, jump, and climb. Being physically active has been linked to various health benefits in children, including muscle strength, bone strength, brain health, and even better memory. Even babies and toddlers can work on their motor skills through outdoor activities, while also receiving the benefits of fresh air and sunshine.

Sensory Play for Healthy Brains

In addition to physical activity, natural play is full of sensory-rich experiences. Parents may be familiar with various types of indoor sensory activities, such as sensory bins and bottles, but kids can also enjoy all kinds of different textures, smells, and sounds outside. Sensory exploration is amazing for little kids’ brains, as it helps them form vital neural connections.

Curiosity, Creativity, & an Appreciation for Nature

Children are naturally curious about the world, and outdoor adventures are a wonderful way to feed that curiosity. Whether on a hike through the woods or in a backyard, there are so many things to discover and learn about! Plus, when kids are outside without screens and basketfuls of toys, they are challenged to use their imaginations. Suddenly, an ordinary stick becomes a sword and plain pebbles are magical crystals. Such imaginative play is essential for growing their creativity, while also being loads of fun. Although children can be curious and creative inside as well, nature offers a diversity of experiences and allows children to foster a love for the environment- that hopefully will stay with them for their entire lives.

More Natural Play Ideas to Come

Playing outside is important for me and my family, but I also know from experience that sometimes it’s hard to find the right place to play. Throughout my own family’s adventures, I’ve learned a lot about various local parks, as well as how to be prepared for everything. With this blog, I am hoping to make that planning process a little easier for other parents! My goal is to share my own experiences, guides on different parks and trails, and tips for staying safe and embracing the outdoors with babies and young children.
